DIY POPULARITY and WEB LINKS

FORMING LINKS:

This task is manually done and requires some considerable time - I suggest you decide to spend say, one hour per day or a couple hours every weekend etc so that you carry out the task painlessly over a period of weeks or months.

During the time you must be on-line with your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape are the most popular browsers) and search out websites which do the following:

1) have content that is related to your own website content e.g. a travel and tourism site for websites that deal with accommodation, tours, scuba diving etc. What would be unsuitable would be websites about computers, medical goods, casionos, pornography etc. Those don't match your topic.

2) will accept links or listings to other websites like yours .... remember that some offers are free, some free offers are only for a time, some are pay to list only. Check the details.

3) search the website a bit, get a feel for it - sometimes websites are NOT what they seem to be at first. For example a "Caribbean tourism" website might actually be a website for one specific island in the region! Or a website for one island may truthfully be a website about just one hotel on the island! ..... so visit a few of the web pages and see what you find there.

4) do some more evaluation work - check to see where the website puts its "links" and wheteher the page is a hodge-podge or well organised - also check to see if the website is up dated or out of date.

Then you begin to work -
find the place on the website that says "Add your link" or "List with us" and click on the link or button which will take you to the web page you need to begin the process.

At this point you should HAVE ON HAND ALL DETAILS ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT AND YOUR CORRECT WEB ADDRESS - many of these sites will have detailed FORMS for you to fill in .... it saves time if you have the following ready:
  • a short description of your product (say 30 - 50 words)
  • a descriptive title of your product which includes your top keyword
  • your exact and correct web address (if you mis-spell it you have wasted the entire exercise as this makes the webaddress wrong)
  • your exact and correct email address
  • a Username (usually 7 or 8 characters long) which you may be asked to supply - I use the same name for all my submissions as it is easier to keep track of than trying to change the name every time! Choose a name which includes a number, and SAVE IT - write it down. Again, be exact and correct or else you've wasted the effort.
  • a Password - same advice as above.
    The Username and Password will ensure that only YOU can change or authorise changes in the information once the link is made to your website. It is a form of protection. Some websites will GIVE YOU the UName and PWord - these you must write it down or print out and SAVE for future use.
For ACCOMMODATION PLACES in particular, some websites require highly detailed information from you including your rates, number of beds, types of rooms, the amenities in the types rooms etc etc. Have it all on hand in a file folder so you can fill in the form.
NOW with your Data sheet at hand, you are ready to start the process of making links and getting your website added to other valuable websites.
