The internet contains a staggering number of websites amounting to billions of webapges. Websites are now as common as call cards - everyone has them. Anyone with a website that serves a business or community purpose needs to have their website visible, easily found in this giant haystack by those people interested in what you have to offer.

1) The FIRST question website owners must ask is: HOW do you get your website seen by your target audience?

The ANSWER to this lies in knowing: HOW do people find what they are looking for on the Internet? Understanding this allows you to know how to get your website seen by the right audience.

The ANSWER The vast majority of internet users first go to a Search Engine, type in a simple name or phrase in the SEARCH bar and ask the search engine to find websites about that topic. In less than one second, the Search Engine looks in its database and produces the answer - thousands of results.

The top Search Engines are Google, Yahoo and MSN - if your website is listed in their computer database then it is possible for their search to find you. There are also many others SEngines including AOL but these are the three global leaders.

2) The SECOND question becomes : HOW do you get your website in the Search Engine databases?

This ANSWER has many parts and essentially it is about "Search Engine Optimisation"

A) Your website must be written in a computer language which the Search Engines can read. To understand what this means, you must understand that what a human sees when they look at a website is NOT what the Search Engine robot sees.
A Robot is basically the automated process which the Search Engine uses in order to find websites. It is a computer.
Websites are written in codes which computers can read .... HOWEVER If your website is written in FLASH the robot will not be able to understand it or know the contents of your website
ALSO If your website is written in FRAMES (much loved in Germany) the robot will not understand it or find the contents of your website.
Sites written in FLash or Frames return a ZERO answer on Search Engines.
The message here is - do not have websites written in Flash or in Frames.

B) Your website must contain what are called "META TAGS" which describe your website to the Search Engine robot by telling it the "TITLE" and "DESCRIPTION" and the "KEYWORDS" which best describe your website content.
A surprisingly large percentage of websites do NOT have these Meta Tags and this often prevents or even disqualifies them from being found by the Robots.

DOES YOUR WEBSITE have its Meta Tags?
